Central Wellington

Te Aro

Te Aro is the central Wellington neighbourhood of Cuba Street, the laneways, Courtenay Place and the waterfront, and where most of the city's apartments are.

The place

Why people love it here

Te Aro is where the city eats, drinks and goes out. Cuba Street runs through the middle of it with the Bucket Fountain at the top, Hannah's Laneway and Leeds Street have the best food in a hundred metres anywhere in the country, and Courtenay Place is the strip for the night.

It is also where most of the city's apartments are. Warehouse conversions, new towers and everything in between, from Tory Street to Taranaki Street and down to the water.

The waterfront is Te Aro's park. Te Papa, the lagoon and Frank Kitts Park are a few minutes from any front door, and the walk along the harbour to Oriental Bay is the city's Sunday morning.

Civic Square has the library back open, Cuba Street has the Saturday and Sunday markets and the op shops, and Garage Project's brew bar on Leeds Street is where the beer the city is known for gets poured.
