Roseneath
Roseneath is the ridge suburb of Wellington above Oriental Bay, with the harbour on both sides, the town belt behind and the beach at the bottom of the hill.
Why people love it here
Roseneath is the ridge that runs out from Mount Victoria to Point Jerningham, and the streets along it look down on Oriental Bay one side and Evans Bay the other. From Palliser Road and Maida Vale Road you see Matiu/Somes Island, the Remutaka Range and, in winter, the Kaikōura ranges across the strait.
It is a small residential suburb of villas, bungalows and houses built for the view, and it is one of the closest hill suburbs to the city: Oriental Parade is at the bottom of the hill and Courtenay Place is a walk beyond it.
Oriental Bay is the suburb's beach, pool and cafe strip, all of it down the steps or the road. The Mount Victoria town belt is at the back door, with the ridge tracks up to the summit lookout, and Roseneath School is the primary on the hill.
The number 14 bus goes through the suburb into town, the Hataitai side is a few minutes over the ridge, and the harbour path along Evans Bay runs below.
