Why people love it here
Hataitai is a village in the literal sense. Almost everything is on Moxham Avenue and Waitoa Road: the bakery, the Four Square, the pharmacy, the cafes, and a brewery that makes its beer on the premises. Two blocks, and you have done your day.
It has the shape of a suburb built in the 1910s and 1920s and never pulled apart. The shopfronts along Moxham Avenue are one of the most intact early twentieth century retail rows left in Wellington, which is why the whole strip is a heritage area.
The town belt starts where the houses stop. Tracks go straight up off the back streets onto the ridge, and from up there the harbour is laid out in front of you.
And it is quick into town. The bus tunnel puts the city three minutes away, Kilbirnie and the beaches are the other side, and the Basin and the hospital are a short run around the hill.
