Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria is the inner-city hill suburb of Wellington above Courtenay Place, with rows of painted villas, the town belt and the summit lookout above them.

The place

Why people love it here

Mount Victoria is the closest thing Wellington has to a walk-everywhere suburb with gardens. Courtenay Place is at the bottom of the hill, Te Papa and the waterfront are a few minutes further, and you can do all of it without getting in a car.

The streets themselves are the draw. Rows of Victorian and Edwardian houses, most of them still reading as a set rather than as individual renovations, which is rare this close to a city centre.

Above the houses the town belt takes over. Tracks run up through the pines to the lookout, and the view from the top is the one every visitor to Wellington is shown first.

It is also a small, self-contained pocket at street level. A grocer, a couple of cafes and a run of little bars around Pirie Street and Majoribanks Street, enough for a coffee or a glass of something without going into town.
