Wellington northern suburbs

Woodridge

Woodridge is one of the newest of Wellington's northern suburbs, laid out from the 1980s on the old Newlands dairy farm above Seton Nossiter Park, with streets named after trees and Hauora Reserve on the hilltop.

The place

Why people love it here

Woodridge began when Norman Wright bought the Newlands dairy farm in the 1980s and started subdividing the ridge. The Wright family chose trees and wood as the theme, so the streets are Red Beech Avenue, White Pine Avenue, Cedarwood Street, Kentwood Drive and the rest, and the name of the suburb follows. About 200 homes were up by 2011, and the census counted 1,914 people in 2023, a fifth more than five years earlier, so it is still being built.

That makes Woodridge a suburb of new and nearly new houses, on a ridge with bush regrowing in the gullies on either side, and with young families in most of them.

Hauora Reserve is the hill at the top of the suburb, a grassy summit with a loop track round it marked by stone cairns and a playground on the Red Beech Avenue side. Kentwood Drive Reserve is the neighbourhood park lower down, a grassed slope with a playground and a small stream out of a bush gully, looked after by the Woodridge Planters group.

Below all of it is Seton Nossiter Park, thirty hectares of bush along Belmont Stream, reached from the top of White Pine Avenue by Lindsays Track. For town, the 52 and 57 buses run through the suburb on Kentwood Drive and down Newlands Road to Wellington Station, and the New World and the community centre in Newlands are the closest shops.
