Grenada Village
Grenada Village is the 1970s hillside suburb on the eastern side of the motorway above Johnsonville, its streets named for Caribbean islands and its back gate opening into Seton Nossiter Park.
Why people love it here
Grenada Village is a suburb built from a plan. Development started in 1977 on the old McMillan Block, the streets were given West Indian names in a nod to Thomas Drake, the 1840 settler who owned the land, and the houses went up over the following decades. Mark Avenue is the one exception to the naming, because it simply continues the road up from Paparangi.
There is no shopping street here and no pretence of one. The community hall and the playground share a corner of Mandeville Crescent, the hall doubles as the community emergency hub, and the residents' association has run both for decades.
The park is the reason to know the name. Seton Nossiter Park is 30 hectares of bush in Belmont Gully, entered from the car park at the top of Mark Avenue, with Belmont Stream on the valley floor, a remnant stand of tītoki and tawa, and the concrete abutments of the 1885 railway viaduct in the trees near the gate.
Johnsonville is two kilometres south for the mall, the train and the pool, Paparangi's small shops are down the hill, and the number 1 bus leaves the village for the city.
