Newlands
Newlands is the valley suburb on the eastern side of Ngauranga Gorge, eight kilometres north of the city, with Te Ara Paparārangi running along the harbour escarpment and Newlands College in the middle.
Why people love it here
Newlands sits in a valley between two ridgelines, and one of those ridges is the harbour escarpment, the long edge above the Hutt Road where the northern suburbs look out over the water to Petone and the Hutt Valley. Until the 1950s this was pig and dairy country that supplied most of Wellington's town milk, and the streets that replaced the farms follow the valley up from Newlands Road.
Newlands Road is the spine. The New World is at the corner of Bracken Road, the college and the intermediate are up Bracken Road behind it, and the community centre on Batchelor Street, opened in 2009 after a local push, has the toy library, the drop-in lounge and the food bank.
Te Ara Paparārangi is the walk. It runs 4.6 km along the escarpment from Waihinahina Park to Promontory Crescent, no steps, through the old-growth and regenerating bush of Gilberd Bush Reserve and below Ngā Hau e Whā o Paparārangi marae, with the harbour in view most of the way. Waihinahina Park at the top end is the old Horokiwi landfill turned into a dog park with a picnic area and the Hutt Valley laid out in front of it.
On the other side of the suburb, Seton Nossiter Park's bush gully is reached from Colchester Crescent. For town, the 52, 56, 57 and 58 buses all run down Newlands Road to Wellington Station, and Metlink's July timetable put a bus on Newlands Road about every five minutes at peak.
