Central Wellington

Thorndon

Thorndon is Wellington's oldest suburb, at the north end of the city centre, with Tinakori Road's villas and antique shops, Parliament at the bottom of the hill and the Botanic Garden at the top.

The place

Why people love it here

Thorndon was here before the city was. The villas and cottages along Tinakori Road are some of the oldest houses in Wellington, Katherine Mansfield was born at number 25, and Old St Paul's on Mulgrave Street has been standing since 1866.

Tinakori Road is still the heart of it: antique dealers, a florist, the general store and the cafes, with the Botanic Garden's rose garden at one end and the Bolton Street cemetery walk at the other.

It is also the most connected suburb in the city. Parliament, the National Library and the Beehive are at the bottom of Molesworth Street, the railway station is a few minutes further, and Lambton Quay starts where Thorndon ends.

Thorndon School is the primary, Wellington Girls' College is on Pipitea Street, and the Backbencher across from Parliament has been the pub where the country's politics gets argued for decades.
