Kelburn
Kelburn is the hill suburb of Wellington directly above Lambton Quay, home to the Cable Car, the Botanic Garden and Victoria University.
Why people love it here
Kelburn is the suburb the Cable Car goes to. From the top station it is a few minutes down Upland Road to the village, a few minutes across to the university, and the Botanic Garden starts at the gate. Not many places let you walk to work through a garden and ride home up a hill.
The village on Upland Road has the cafes, the pub and the school, and the streets around it are lined with the villas and bungalows of the early 1900s, a lot of them with the harbour in the windows.
Victoria University's Kelburn campus keeps the suburb young and busy in term time, and the Hunter Building on the ridge is one of the city's landmarks. Space Place at Carter Observatory sits in the garden, and Kelburn Park is the flat green where the suburb plays cricket.
It is also connected in every direction. The Cable Car and the Terrace below it for the city, Glenmore Street round to Thorndon, and the bus through the village to Karori and Zealandia.
