Wellington eastern suburbs

Rongotai

Rongotai is the flat Wellington suburb between Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay, with the surf beach at the end of the street, the big shops on the doorstep and the airport next door.

The place

Why people love it here

Rongotai is the practical heart of the eastern suburbs. The retail park has the supermarket, the hardware and the sports store, Kilbirnie's Bay Road is a few minutes one way and Lyall Bay's beach a few minutes the other, and the whole suburb is on the level.

The houses are the bungalows and state houses of the 1930s and 1940s, on good flat sections with room for a garden and a garage, and a lot of them have been opened up and warmed up by the families who live in them now.

Lyall Bay is the suburb's beach. The surf, the sand and Maranui on the front are a short walk down the road, and the coast path runs east to Moa Point and west round to Houghton Bay.

Rongotai College is the secondary school the east sends its boys to, Ākau Tangi's ten courts and the aquatic centre are in Kilbirnie next door, and the airport means the rest of the country is a taxi ride away.
