Kilbirnie is where the east does its shopping. Bay Road has the Plaza, the supermarket, the library and a strip of restaurants that runs from Indian to Ethiopian to Malaysian, and the big-box stores are a few minutes along at Rongotai.
It is flat, which in Wellington is worth saying. The streets between Bay Road and Evans Bay are on the level, the bike ride along the bay into town is easy, and the bus through the Mount Victoria tunnel has the city fifteen minutes away.
The sport is here. Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre on Kilbirnie Crescent is the city's pool, Ākau Tangi on Kemp Street has ten indoor courts, and Kilbirnie Park behind the Plaza has the fields and the playground.
Evans Bay's shared path runs along the water to Oriental Bay, Lyall Bay's beach is over the rise, and Kilbirnie School, Evans Bay Intermediate and St Patrick's College are all inside the suburb.
