Northland
Northland is the hill suburb between Kelburn and Wilton, reached through the Northland Tunnel from Kelburn, with the former fire station on Northland Road, the village shops opposite it and Te Ahumairangi above.
Why people love it here
Northland sits on the south-western slopes of Te Ahumairangi, the hill above Thorndon, and the way in from the city is through the Northland Tunnel, which the trams first ran through in 1929. The tunnel comes out at the village, and the village is where the suburb happens.
The 1930 fire station on Northland Road is the building everyone knows. It was designed by William Turnbull in a neo-Georgian style, with its central archway and brick walls, and it served the western suburbs until 1997, when it became apartments. The shops face it across the road.
Two prime ministers, Michael Joseph Savage and Peter Fraser, lived at 64 to 66 Harbour View Road, and the writer Robin Hyde lived on Northland Road in the 1920s. Northland School, on Harbour View Road since 1906, takes children from Year 1 to Year 8, and the Northland Memorial Community Centre on Woburn Road has the halls and the badminton.
Ian Galloway Park, with its fields and the fenced dog park, is at the Wilton end, and Ōtari-Wilton's Bush and the Botanic Garden are each a short drive away. The number 13 bus runs through the village to the city, and Kelburn and the university are the other side of the tunnel.
