Wellington western suburbs

Karori

Karori is the wide valley suburb 4 km west of Wellington's centre, through the Karori Tunnel, with Zealandia at the city end, Mākara Peak at the far end and Karori Road running the length of it.

The place

Why people love it here

Karori is a whole town inside the city. Karori Road runs the length of the valley from the tunnel to the park, and along it are the mall, Te Māhanga Karori Library with its plaza and cafe, the pool and the recreation centre, the Pickle Jar on Parkvale Road and the Taphouse further up.

It has been settled since the 1840s, the tunnel opened in 1900 and the cemetery on Old Karori Road opened in 1891, so the streets carry a long run of eras, from the old villas near the tunnel to the family streets of Karori West and the newer sections towards South Karori Road.

Two of the city's big green places are here. Zealandia, the fenced sanctuary on Waiapu Road, sits in the valley behind the cemetery, and Mākara Peak Mountain Bike Park, with more than 40 km of track, starts at the end of South Karori Road. Wrights Hill Fortress and its wartime tunnels are on the ridge above.

Karori Park, at the far end of Karori Road, has the fields and the cafe in the clubrooms, and the number 2 bus runs from the park through the tunnel and across the city to Miramar and Seatoun.
