Johnsonville

Johnsonville is the town centre of Wellington's northern suburbs, at the top of Ngauranga Gorge seven kilometres from the city, with the Waitohi library and pool, the mall and the end of the Johnsonville railway line.

The place

Why people love it here

Johnsonville started as Frank Johnson's timber clearing in 1841 and has been the northern suburbs' town ever since. The railway arrived in 1886, the electric trains in 1938, and the mall in the 1960s was the first in the region. It is where the north comes to shop, swim, borrow a book and catch the train.

The centre of that now is Waitohi on Moorefield Road, the community hub that opened in December 2019. The library is three times the size of the old one, Common Ground cafe is inside the door, Whānau Manaaki kindergarten is next to it, and the whole thing joins up with the Keith Spry Pool, the community centre and Memorial Park through one landscaped yard.

The hill behind the suburb is Mount Kaukau, and Johnsonville Park on its northern flank is part of the largest run of native bush in the city. The Northern Walkway climbs from the car park at the end of Truscott Avenue up to the summit and on to the Botanic Garden, and the Old Coach Road, the 1858 route to Ōhāriu Valley, is a wide heritage track for walkers and bikes.

Alex Moore Park is the sports ground, with the Waiora hub opened in 2021 for the football, cricket and rugby clubs. Getting to town is a choice: the Johnsonville Line runs half-hourly and every fifteen minutes at peak, the route 1 bus runs every ten minutes through the city to Island Bay, and the motorway starts at the top of the gorge.
