Aro Valley
Aro Valley is the inner-city valley suburb of Wellington five minutes from Cuba Street, with 1890s cottages, a bakery since 1989, a brewery on Aro Street and the bush at the end of every road.
Why people love it here
Aro Valley is the closest thing Wellington has to a village inside the city. Aro Street runs the length of it, with the bakery, the cafe, the fish and chip shop and the superette in a row, and Garage Project brewing at number 68 with the taproom across the road.
The houses are the reason people fall for it. Workers' cottages and villas from the 1890s and 1900s, painted every colour, on streets that climb the valley sides. Small sections, big character, and a community that has looked after all of it for a long time.
The community centre at 48 Aro Street runs the Aro Fair and the Arolympics, Aro Park has the playground, and Te Aro School sits at the mouth of the valley on The Terrace.
At the top end the valley turns into Waimapihi Reserve, with walking and mountain-bike tracks up to the Zealandia fence and over to Brooklyn and Karori. Cuba Street is a ten-minute walk the other way.
