Wellington northern suburbs

Churton Park

Churton Park is the family suburb in the hills north of Johnsonville, farmland until 1970 and still growing up Stebbings Valley, with a village of shops around the New World and the community centre on Lakewood Avenue.

The place

Why people love it here

Churton Park is one of the youngest suburbs in Wellington. It was farmland until 1970, when developer John Dick Walker began the subdivision and named it after Jock Churton, a Fletcher director he had worked with. The first houses went up in the mid 1970s, Churton Park School opened in 1975, and the suburb has kept growing since: Amesbury School opened in 2012, and the census counted 8,319 people in 2023, up by a seventh in five years.

The village is the part that makes it feel like a place rather than a subdivision. Built from 2011 on the low ground where Lakewood Avenue meets Westchester Drive, it is five buildings around the New World, with about fifteen shops, Simmer cafe, and the council's Churton Park Community Centre at 75 Lakewood Avenue running the playgroups and the classes.

Because the suburb was built across hills, there are walking tracks threaded between the streets. Callender Reserve has the Foxham Track and the Amesbury Track linking Melksham Drive to the streets either side, the Gifford Grove Track climbs to Toutouwai Hill Reserve for the view over Churton Park and Grenada, and the Stebbings Valley track runs from Westchester Drive past the Stebbings Dam to Rochdale Drive and on toward Glenside. Churton Park Reserve is the sports field, with the playground and the old macrocarpas.

The route 1 bus starts here and joins the ten-minute service at Johnsonville through the city to Island Bay, the Glenside interchange puts the suburb straight onto the motorway, and Johnsonville station is a short drive or bus ride down the hill.
