Broadmeadows
Broadmeadows is the small, high suburb on the ridge between Khandallah and Johnsonville, 64 hectares of steep streets about 7 km from the city, with Mount Kaukau and the Skyline Walkway along its western edge.
Why people love it here
The name says meadows and the ground says otherwise. Broadmeadows was built on steeply sloping hills and it has some of the highest streets in Wellington City, with a number of houses above 300 metres. That is the whole point of the place: the streets climb, and the harbour opens up behind you as they do.
It is a compact suburb, 64 hectares and about 1,700 people at the 2023 census, and it is younger and more mixed than its neighbours: half its residents are under 37, and 42.3 percent of them were born overseas.
The street names carry on from Khandallah below: Kanpur Road, Jaunpur Crescent, Orissa Crescent, Nagpur Terrace, Rajkot Terrace, Sirsi Terrace, Nalanda Crescent and Rangoon Street. Burma Road runs the length of the suburb and was pushed through to Johnsonville in 1936.
Mount Kaukau is at the back door. One of the four tracks to the summit starts at Sirsi Terrace, and from the top the Skyline Walkway runs 18 kilometres of ridge from Churton Park to the Makara Saddle in Karori, while the Northern Walkway drops the other way towards the Botanic Garden.
The everyday things are downhill in Johnsonville: the shopping centre with its supermarket and about seventy shops, and Waitohi, which put the library, the Keith Spry Pool with its heated 25 metre indoor pool, a cafe and a kindergarten on one site in 2019.
Rāroa station on the Johnsonville Line serves Broadmeadows along with Rāroa itself, and the number 24 bus runs from the suburb through Johnsonville into the city.
