Melrose
Melrose is the hill suburb of Wellington above Newtown and the south coast, with Wellington Zoo on one side, Truby King Park on the other and a view from almost every street.
Why people love it here
Melrose is a suburb of outlooks. It sits on the ridge between Newtown and Houghton Bay, and depending on the street the view is the city and the harbour, or Cook Strait and the South Island, or both.
It is green and settled: family homes from the mid-century onward, the town belt and reserve land around the edges, and Truby King Park, the old Truby King house and its gardens, at the centre of it.
Wellington Zoo is at the bottom of the hill on the Newtown side, and Newtown's Riddiford Street, the hospital and the schools are a few minutes beyond it. The other way the road drops to Houghton Bay and Princess Bay and the south coast walk.
The Southern Walkway runs through the suburb on its way from Mount Victoria to the coast, with Mount Albert's lookout above, and the bus through Newtown puts the city twenty minutes away.
